We all know that looking after our dental health is important. But how do we align our health choices with our eco-friendly aspirations? Many of us have already made the switch to bamboo toothbrushes, perhaps even natural toothpastes too. Floss is the next big hurdle. Luckily, there are eco-friendly flosses available and, in this article, we explore the many reasons why we should make the switch.
Traditional floss that you find on the shelves at your local grocery store is made from nylon which is a type of plastic. That plastic is made from crude oil which is a non-renewable source.
Basically, once we have used it up, it is gone. Silk floss on the other hand can be produced indefinitely.
Plastic can take up to 1000 years to decompose. That means that all the plastic that has ever been produced still exists on the planet in some form. This includes all that plastic floss.
Silk floss decomposes much faster. It can take as little as 3-6 months to compost in a commercial facility or 6-10 months in your home compost bin.
It removes the worry of what will happen to your used floss. In less than a year, you can be confident that your floss is gone.
Most flosses require something to help them glide through the gaps between your teeth. Traditional flosses use petroleum-based wax and/or Teflon-like substances. Both these substances have been shown to be linked to some rather unwanted and scary health conditions, so looking for more natural alternatives is definitely the way to go.
Our natural silk floss is coated in a plant-based wax called Candelilla, which gives you the same gliding experience without any of the nasties.
No plastic packaging
On top of the nylon floss itself, there is the little plastic container that traditional nylon floss comes in. Plastic packaged inside more plastic is far from ideal.
Our natural silk floss comes in a refillable glass or metal container with a stainless-steel lid. Once you have used up your floss, you can simply order new silk floss refills to go inside too. TreeBird's silk floss not packed in plastic either. We use a compostable kraft paper box printed with soy ink to keep the floss safe and protected. We also use only recycled & compostable shipping mailers to get the floss to you.
No artificial colors or fragrances
We are used to our dental products having a minty fresh scent and pure white color. Traditional flosses normally achieve this through artificial colorings or fragrances. Our silk floss is white naturally and uses essential oils to give you that mint flavor that you expect from your floss but from natural sources.
Our silk floss is made using Ahimsa peace silk. While with other forms of silk, the moths are killed in production, with peace silk they complete their metamorphosis before the silk is collected. This means that the silkworms are free to hatch before their cocoons are collected and turned into floss.
Are you ready to make the switch?
When it comes to making eco-friendly choices for your home and your lifestyle, we often reflect on both the benefits to the environment and the consequences to our own health and wellbeing.
Luckily, when switching to our fully compostable silk floss, you can make the choice with confidence. You get the same results without any of the worry.
